The Hollywood Reporter has reported that MGM has lost the rights to the Tomb Raider franchise. At the moment, several major film studios and streaming services are fighting for the purchase of the popular universe at once, and the winner with 100% probability will restart the series with new actors / directors.
Thus, the sequel to “Tomb Raider” with Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft is finally canceled. It was supposed to be released back in March last year, but after several changes of directors and protracted preparations for filming, it was put on hold.
The first picture in the next restart was released in 2018 under the standard title for the series Tomb Raider / Tomb Raider and collected $ 275 million on a budget of $ 94 million.
Prior to this, the role of Lara Croft was played by Angelina Jolie, who was lucky to star in two Paramount films at once – Lara Croft: Tomb Raider / Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life / Lara Croft : Tomb Raider 2 – The Cradle of Life (2003).
Due to the 2021 purchase of MGM by Internet giant Amazon , the rights to the franchise have reverted to producer Graham King and his company GK Films. The latter acquired them from the Square Enix game studio in 2011 and already in 2013 signed an agreement to shoot with MGM.
