Microsoft accidentally released the Windows 11 22H2 update to unsupported PCs

Microsoft recently released the next major update to Windows 11 22H2 (build 22621) in the Release Preview channel. However, the company accidentally made this update available for PCs that are not officially supported.

Twitter and Reddit users quickly noticed the error. Hundreds of participants in the Windows Insider Program have been able to upgrade their Windows 10 PCs with older processors to Windows 11 22H2. As a reminder, Microsoft has strict minimum hardware requirements for Windows 11, limiting millions of PCs with older processors. Windows 11 can only be officially installed on systems using Intel 8th generation (Coffee Lake) processors or later or AMD Zen 2 and later. While there are fairly easy ways to install the OS on older systems, Microsoft doesn’t even allow members of the Windows Insider program to install beta builds of the OS on unsupported PCs. Therefore, this error once again underlines the company’s controversial policy regarding updates.

Microsoft is aware of the error and says it is investigating.
