Pop producer Naughty Boy (NB: he’s not the Messiah) lived up to his name by smuggling in spices, hidden down his sock, to add flavour to the campmates’ rice and beans. Unfortunately, he made the mistake of telling producers, who duly confiscated the contraband. Hardly a criminal mastermind but he was among the most promising participants, along with the three Ms: Madeley, Minchin and Miller. The lattter was chosen by the public to tackle the first eating task, “Dreaded Diner”, Monday night. Expect more “gipping”.
At 78, former Strictly Come Dancing judge Phillips is the show’s oldest ever contestant. Her appearance could be seen as two fingers up to the BBC, which dropped her 12 years ago in an ageism scandal. “I can’t live with dirt and I’m scared of everything,” said Phillips. Good luck with that amid the castle chaos. She whinged a lot and might not last long.
Hosts Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly reminded us why they’re the best in the business at this sort of lark. They were silly, sarky and immediately struck up a warm rapport with the campmates. They also dealt with a troublesome fly (there’s live TV for you) and even wove in a topical gag about newly sacked Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
