On the night of May 4, Stanislav Shushkevich, the first head of the independent Republic of Belarus, died in Minsk.
He was 87 years old. By the way, Shushkevich’s condition worsened after suffering COVID-19. Due to illness, he spent some time in intensive care.

Shushkevich was a people’s deputy of the USSR, and then he was elected first deputy chairman of the Verkhovna Rada. After the August putsch of 1991, he headed the Belarusian parliament. It was Stanislav Shushkevich from Belarus who signed the Belovezhskaya Agreement in 1991, which ended the existence of the USSR.
