This fall, Intel plans to raise prices for its flagship products such as consumer and server processors, Wi-Fi chips and controllers, according to Nikkei Asia. The increase is expected to vary by model, ranging from single digits to as high as 20%.
Intel’s decision is due to rising cost of components, materials, shipping and labor. There is also the problem of rising inflation. It makes consumers think twice before spending on expensive purchases. This has already shown itself in a sharp drop in shipments of PCs, TVs and smartphones this year as demand declines.
Intel previously warned of an upcoming price increase as part of the announcement of the latest financial report. Then CEO Pat Gelsinger talked about higher prices for the company’s products. Another warning came from CFO Dave Zimmer, who said Intel was “looking for targeted price increases in certain segments.”
Intel’s next generation of processors, Raptor Lake, is expected to arrive in the fourth quarter, and the price increase will likely affect future processors. Thus, for those who are planning to buy a new Intel processor or a whole PC with such a chip, it is better not to delay the purchase.
