Peugeot 5008 Allure SUV vs Citroen Grand C4 SpaceTourer MPV – what’s the best seven-seat family car for 2021?

It’s horses for courses here, then – but the simple fact is that if you’re struggling for space in either of these cars, you probably need a van instead.

Costs

Given that it’s the more aspirational car of the two, it should probably come as no surprise that the 5008 is also the more expensive. You’ll pay almost exactly £1,000 more for the 5008 in this form than you will for the Grand C4 SpaceTourer, despite both having an identical engine and gearbox combination and comparable equipment lists.

That said, because the 5008 is predicted to hold its value so much better, you should lose less cash on it when the time comes to sell it on or part-exchange it, which makes it the cheaper ownership proposition in the long run if you’re buying outright.

On the other hand, if you’re planning to finance your car, as most buyers will, the Citroen seems to work out quite a bit cheaper judging by the deals around at the time of writing. The caveat is that these deals change all the time, so it’s worth double-checking that still holds true when the time comes for you to sign on the dotted line.

What’s more, Citroen servicing and repair costs tend to be a little more affordable than Peugeot’s. As for fuel economy, it’s much of a muchness, which is no great surprise given both of these cars have the same engine and gearbox.

One more thing that’s in the Citroen’s favour is the option of a five-year warranty at no extra cost. Order your Grand C4 SpaceTourer online, and Citroen will top its standard three-year, 60,000-mile warranty up to five years and 100,000 miles – something you can’t do with the Peugeot, whose three-year, 60,000-mile warranty is the minimum new car warranty you can expect these days.

Equipment and safety

Both of these cars come pretty well equipped as standard, with dual-zone climate control, sat-nav, cruise control, Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, and automatic lights and wipers.

The Peugeot then adds ambient lighting, bigger alloy wheels, and a larger touchscreen. But the Citroen gives you a panoramic sunroof, a powered boot lid, adaptive cruise control and fold-down tray tables on the backs of the front seats, making it the better equipped of the two.

Both cars have a similar, and very generous, suite of safety equipment. As the 5008 is the slightly newer of the two cars, its technology is a little more advanced. Having said that, the Citroen doesn’t go without any of the important bits of kit that statistically reduce your likelihood of having a crash, so it’s no poor relation in this regard.
