“They took the boots, filled them with water and put them on again”: Denisova about the bullying of the invaders over the Ukrainians in captivity

Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for Human Rights Lyudmila Denisova spoke about the terrible torture Ukrainian citizens were subjected to in Russian captivity.

She wrote about this in her Telegram channel. According to Denisova, she was shocked by the stories of Ukrainian citizens who fell into Russian captivity, who were released as a result of the exchange.

In particular, the Ukrainians shared that the invaders took their boots from them, poured water into them and put them on again.

“After that, the prisoners were forced to lie face down in the cold for three to four days. With frostbitten limbs and blindfolds, the men were transferred to Russian camps, then to SIZO No. 1, a prison in the Russian city of Kursk, where they were not provided with any medical care,” Denisova said.

According to her, Ukrainians were dressed in the form of prisoners, had their hair cut, tortured, forced to learn patriotic Russian songs and perform them for their guards.

“The interrogations took place two or three times a day, after which the men were severely beaten and soon forced to sign documents stating that they had been treated well,” says Denisova.

Seriously ill Ukrainians, with limbs and toes amputated as a result of frostbite, were decided to be exchanged. Due to the lack of ambulances, the occupiers were transporting seriously wounded Ukrainians for five hours on cargo railway platforms for exchange. “The Rashists put the wounded on the highway on stretchers, where they were taken by Russian soldiers,” Denisova added.

She stressed that by taking civilians hostage, the Russian occupiers violate the norms of international humanitarian law, in particular Article 34 of the Geneva Convention for the Protection of Civilian Population in Time of War of 1949, according to which the unreasonable detention of civilian hostages is categorically prohibited.
