The city’s mayor, Jose Luis Almeida, said two men who worked in the building were killed.
Earlier, he also said that four people were taken to the hospital, one in serious condition. The cause of the explosion is still unknown.
“Firefighters are checking the structure of the building and see if there could have been more people,” the mayor said.
Emergency services spokeswoman Gema Martin said the school, located across the street from the building, was unaffected and there was no need to evacuate the children.
