New USB4 Version 2.0 standard doubles data transfer rates to 80Gbps

The USB Promoter Group has announced the USB4 Version 2.0 specification. This is a significant update to the standard. The new version will provide data transfer speeds up to 80 Gb / s through cables and USB-C connectors. By comparison, Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 Version 1.0 support a maximum throughput of 40 Gbps in both directions.

The new architecture of the physical layer provides an increased data transfer rate of the standard. It is compatible with existing passive USB Type-C 40Gb/s cables and new active USB Type-C 80Gb/s cables. In doing so, the USB4 Version 2.0 specification will be backward compatible with previous USB versions, including USB4 Version 1.0, USB 3.2 and USB 2.0, and Thunderbolt 3.

The new standard includes updated communication and display protocols to make better use of the increased bandwidth. It also allows you to tunnel USB 3.2 data at speeds over 20Gbps. The latest DisplayPort and PCIe specifications are supported, which probably means DisplayPort 2.0 and PCIe 5.0 ( PCIe 6.0 just came out earlier this year ).

The USB Promoter Group says the new standard should be published ahead of the USB DevDays scheduled for November. So devices supporting USB4 Version 2.0 should be expected as early as next year.
