According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sapochnik is leaving House of the Dragon just after signing a new initial development deal with HBO. Under the terms of the agreement, the network will prioritize any projects it develops going forward. Sapochnik will remain on House of the Dragon as an executive producer, along with Alan Taylor, who will also executive produce and direct episodes for the series’ second season. In a statement about his departure, Sapochnik said that it was an “honor and privilege” for him to work on the series. He also expressed confidence in Alan Taylor’s ability to make House of the Dragon an even stronger series.

“I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved in Season 1 and really excited about the enthusiastic response from our viewers,” Sapochnik said. “It was incredibly difficult to make the decision to move on, but I know this is the right choice for me personally and professionally. However, when I do, I am deeply relieved to know that Alan will be joining the series. He is someone I have known and respected for a long time and I believe this precious series couldn’t be in better hands.”
