Sony has completely updated the internal design in the latest revision of the PlayStation 5. The updated PS5 appeared in Australia last month. YouTuber Austin Evans took a look at her innards and found many changes. Sony is now using a new, smaller motherboard, slightly different cooling, and a redesigned SSD enclosure.

The changes made it possible to reduce the weight of the console, while its appearance was completely preserved. The biggest change was the upgraded motherboard, which is about 5cm smaller. The PS5 cooler got another heatpipe, but the heatsink has been shrunk.

This isn’t the first time the company has changed the PS5’s cooling. Last year, Sony already released an updated model with a smaller heatsink. According to Evans, the new motherboard with heatsink of the year now weighs around 1.1kg, which is 400g lighter than the original design.

Sony has changed the layout of some components on the motherboard. In particular, the CMOS battery is now completely hidden under the heatsink. Previously, it was in an open place, which made it easier to remove it – now for this you need to completely disassemble the prefix.

The updated SSD design hides the circuit board behind a metal plate. The researcher suggests that in this way Sony has improved the cooling of the drive.

Collectively, the changes to the PlayStation 5 resulted in a 20-30W reduction in power consumption. Evans suggests that by making the changes, the company reduced the cost of the console. Interestingly, the changes coincided withthe PS5 price increase in a number of countries.
