GSC Game World, developer of Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl, is one of the many studios hard hit by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the ongoing war. An anticipated sequel was scheduled for release this year, but was delayed until 2023 shortly after Invasion.
The Xbox Store recently began refunding pre-orders for the game with the announcement that the game’s release has been delayed indefinitely. Stopped accepting new orders. Behind this is solely Microsoft’s refund policy – this is what they do with any game without an exact release date. The GSC commented on the situation:
“We had to move the game to 2023, there is no exact release date yet,” a company representative writes. “We made the announcement at E3 Microsoft Extended along with a dev diary and introductory video. Microsoft is refunding pre-orders for games without a specific release date. When we later announce a date, pre-orders will be available again on Xbox. This does not apply to PC pre-orders (Steam, EGS, GOG).

The consequences of the war for GSC Game World were truly terrible. In June, the studio shared a video that tells about the events that happened to the developers in the first months of the war. It shows the remnants of what was once the Kyiv office of GSC, employees share personal stories, leading developers discuss the possibility of joining ZSU. The company is still in the process of moving its operations to Prague . Steam’s Stalker 2 release date is December 2023.
