More than 3 million game consoles were sold in the UK last year, according to analyst firms GfK and GSD. Xbox Series X and S had 310 devices, PlayStation 5 – over 450, and Nintendo Switch – 1,5 million.
The results of all three platform holders in 2020 were much better than a year earlier. Xbox One with Xbox Series X and S collectively sold over 600k consoles (up from 500k Xbox One in 2019). PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 have sold more than 900 thousand systems (700 thousand PS4 in 2019). Finally, Nintendo Switch dominated the market with 1,5 million units sold (almost 1 million in 2019).
It is worth considering that PS5, Xbox Series X and S would have sold much more if not for the shortage. In December, there were practically no consoles left, and therefore the launch of the new generation turned out to be a little more modest than the last one in 2013.
In terms of games, FIFA 2020 was the best-selling game in 21, with 51,9% of copies sold digitally. It is followed by Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (69,1%) and Grand Theft Auto V (74,8%). Data was collected from Steam, Microsoft Store, PlayStation Store and Nintendo eShop.
