Positioning
Here and here you can read large-scale first views of the Huawei P40 series devices. There is so much information in them that a full review would simply repeat all the points of the texts from Eldar Murtazin. And here is a review of the Huawei P40.
Therefore, I decided to prepare a comparative review of two Huawei flagships at once: P40 Pro and P40 Pro Plus. And since the latter was brought to Russia not so long ago, this material also shifted a little in time. In any case, these smartphones will be relevant for at least six months, or even longer. Although the Mate 40 Pro, which is due to be shown in September, may compete with the P40 Pro version. However, while it appears on the home market, while it is delivered to us, a lot of time will pass. In addition, its price will certainly not be less than 80 rubles.
So, about Huawei P40 Pro and P40 Pro Plus. I want to start by chiding the Chinese company for two very similar devices. Both are flagships, only the second is a little cooler. This is a problem not only for Huawei, but also for other companies: for example, Samsung released the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and the Galaxy Note 20, which is kind of a flagship, but not very much. Well, then journalists have to explain the intricacies of marketing to ordinary users. It turns out a little confusing in my opinion.
Therefore, in terms of positioning, the P40 Pro and P40 Pro Plus smartphones are top-end devices with the highest possible parameters at the moment and with minor differences between themselves.
How they differ, you can find out from the table with technical characteristics. But in short:
Plus version:
- Slightly thicker and heavier
- More memory
- Slightly different cameras
- Faster wireless charging
- Much higher cost
By the way, about the cost. The P40 Pro will cost 70 rubles, but the P000 Pro Plus is already in the space of 40 rubles. Whether the overpayment of 100 is worth it – we learn from this material.
In order not to copy-paste articles, I’ll tell you about my impression of the devices and describe the differences.

Appearance
The first thing to look for when buying smartphones is color. The younger version has three of them: shimmering silver, black, deep blue. It is strange that the intermediate version was called too simply, BLM was just not enough. And the older one has glossy black. The difference between the two black colors is that the P40 Pro has a matte material (satin glass), while the P40 Pro Plus has a glossy material.
Of course, matte looks much nicer and more impressive. Moreover, now such design is in trend. This P40 Pro Plus had to be made of satin glass – expensive and rich.
The sizes of the camera models differ. Much the same as the P40 vs P40 Pro. The P40 Pro Plus, of course, is slightly larger: 26×46 mm and 23×44 for the P40 Pro. The height is the same plus or minus.
Pro Plus, Pro, Apple iPhone SE
And remember the time when we measured the protrusion at the cameras, and somewhere the camera was flush or recessed into the body. And now a fist-sized blotch – and everything is fine. The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is quite tough, in my opinion, although it looks solid.
I am sure that next year the fashion for large camera modules will pass. Simply because people play enough with these zooms and understand that it is better to have a normal-sized smartphone than a gadget with a knob on the back.
About the weight. The younger version is 208 grams, the older one is 223 grams. The difference is almost not felt. But these are still heavy devices. I would say so – massive. Since the thickness of 9 mm is already a bit too much. Yes, plus a camera module of about 2.5 mm. 2010 sends us greetings.
Nevertheless, due to the design features, it is pleasant to use smartphones. The ergonomics are excellent here.
Controls, connectors in Huawei P40 Pro and P40 Pro Plus are in the same places.
Speaker under the screen? Yes, the solution is strange. In 2020, I want to have a normal speaker. And to make it stereo. I feel that in a couple of years the same Apple will release the iPhone without any conversational dynamics at all, explaining that, according to statistics, we almost stopped talking: all communication went to social networks. This nonsense will be supported by other manufacturers, and we will step into a bright new future.
Total: large, thick, heavy, but nevertheless – ergonomic.
Screens
And here it seems like there should be no questions – all specifications are the same. However, there are nuances in real life.
The first is color rendering. The Huawei P40 Pro Plus brings out white with a slight pinkish tint, while the P40 Pro brings white closer to blue. Nevertheless, in the latter, the colors look a little more natural.
The second is brightness. Yes, there is something to say here. The P40 Pro Plus has a brightness of 680 cd / m2, while the P40 Pro has a brightness of around 640 cd / m2. It is clear that these can be different matrices from production, but the fact is the fact.
The third is the viewing angles. Come on, pour in 2020 about viewing angles! In Pro Plus, the screen fades into a greenish tint, and Pro in a warm hue. I don’t know how in the photo, but live at the angles of the Huawei P40 Pro, compared to the Plus version, it looks like IPS versus OLED, where OLED is in Pro Plus. This is strange.
The refresh rate of the screen is 90 Hz. Fast, as smooth as possible – no questions asked.
What about PWM? Turn on flicker reduction in the settings and measure the data:
Brightness | P40 Pro ripple ratio (lower is better; rate up to 10%) | P40 Pro Plus ripple rate (lower is better; rate up to 10%) |
100% | 3% | 5% |
70% | 3,5% | 5,5% |
50% | 4,5% | 6,5% |
25% | 7,5% | 13% |
5% | 15% | 18% |
As you can see, the P40 Pro shows a lower CP value. The P40 Pro Plus has slightly more. However, at 25% brightness, when you use your phone at night, the P40 Pro Plus already exceeds the 10% threshold.
Total: the brightness is higher in the P40 Pro Plus, but the PWM appears at 25% of the matrix backlight brightness; the P40 Pro has a slightly lower brightness, viewing angles are average, but the PWM should affect the eyes less.

Hardware and running time
From the table with parameters, you realized that both smartphones are equipped with 8 GB of RAM. The built-in memory for the P40 Pro is 256 GB, for the P40 Pro Plus – 512 GB.
The speed of the RAM turned out to be higher in the older version – 29700 MB / s, in the younger version – 26700 MB / s.
But the speed of the built-in memory is higher in the younger model – 1000/400 MB / s, in the older model – 900/270 MB / s.
Is it felt in practice? Not. The question is closed ?
The processors are exactly the same, behave the same way. No brakes or glitches. Of course they have the highest power it is not clear why… Just in case, I ran the Antutu test: the P40 Pro has exactly 500 points, and the P000 Pro Plus has 40 points.
At the moment, the performance in the flagships is excessive. There are no games or programs that would load the processor to the fullest. There are only applications that are crookedly written for Android. And turning a smartphone into an uber device for games in 4K 120 fps, and for encoding 8K videos, and for something else is an empty idea. For these tasks, they came up with laptops / ultrabooks / PCs.
Under load, the heating is almost not felt, but in toys, the back panels heat up to 42 degrees Celsius.
Total: there is a difference in numbers, but in real life you will not notice it; fast and smooth smartphones.
With the operating time, everything is smooth: 13 hours of video playback at maximum brightness, 5 hours of games, about 5 hours of screen glow at automatic brightness on average. The data is good, but not cosmic.

Wireless charging
I will not describe the software capabilities. Just in case, I repeat that there are no Google services either. And then from time to time they send to the mail about the following letters: “I want to buy a Huawei P40 Pro, but I don’t understand: are there Google services there or not?”. I have been using such smartphones for almost a year now. I do not feel pleasure. Probably because such a job: you need to check different applications, test phones with games, and so on. And the work should be on the stream, and not like this: now I have to download the aurora store again, look for “app” there, and then get: “The application needs Google services.” When a smartphone is personal, you can experiment with the implementation of GMS. It didn’t work out – again, it didn’t work out – again. In my case: if it didn’t work out, then I won’t roll over GMS again – there is no time. And everyone wants a full review.
Камеры
In fact, this is the main difference between Huawei P40 Pro and P40 Pro Plus. That, for the sake of which they will buy an older model for 100 rubles. In order not to bother listing all the cameras, I suggest taking a look at the table:
Main camera | Main camera with three modules:
– Main camera Ultra Vision 50 MP, f / 1.9, OIS, main camera – 40MP ultra wide-angle cinema lens (f / 1.8) – 12 MP telephoto lens, 5x optical zoom, f / 3.4, OIS – 3D Depth |
Main camera with three modules:
– Main camera Ultra Vision 50 MP, f / 1.9, OIS, main camera – 40MP ultra wide-angle cinema lens (f / 1.8) – 8MP telephoto lens (10x optical zoom, f / 4.4 aperture, OIS) – 8 MP telephoto lens, (3x optical zoom, f / 2.4 aperture, OIS) – 3D Depth |
It becomes clear that the P40 Pro only has one telephoto lens at 5X, while the Pro Plus has two – 3X and 10X. As a result, they switch in the interface: shirik, 1X, 3X, 10X. The P40 Pro software includes wide, 1X, 5X and 10X digital zoom.
Despite the same parameters of the wide-angle lens, the P40 Pro shoots better. More detail, a slightly juicier picture, the image is better adjusted in terms of exposure.
The main module for both devices is again the same, and during the day you will not feel the difference. However, when the lighting is lowered, the P40 Pro not only shows more detail, but also more accurate color reproduction. Moreover, as a rule, the P40 Pro Plus sets lower ISO values.
Now let’s move on to the zoom lenses. In short, 3X on the P40 Pro Plus is slightly better than the 5X on the P40 Pro to some extent. 3X is easier to shoot in low light, it is faster, and the difference between 3X and 5X is not too big.
Between the 5X for the Pro and 10X for the Pro Plus, the difference is noticeable to the naked eye. First, much more magnification means more detail. Secondly, its software is better at handling light, color and other things. Thirdly, it always works by itself. What does it mean? When you turn on the 40X zoom on the Huawei P5 Pro in low light, the software transfers the shooting to the main module. But in the case of 10X on the Pro Plus, this does not happen. Yes, the picture is “noisy”, but it turns out exactly from the lens with 10x optics.
Is there a difference between a 1X cropped photo and a 10X without cropping when shooting in the evening? Almost not. Why pay more? But in the afternoon, 10X is always better.
But the photo of the moon came out better on the Huawei P40 Pro. Most likely, the AI simply substituted the finished picture there, and the P40 Pro Plus took it as it is – without the use of AI.
In general, an amazing story: you have a phone in your hands that can optically zoom in a picture 10 times. And almost without distortion. I remember about 5 years ago buying detachable lenses for smartphones. So there even 3x looked terrible.
Another question: why is all this necessary? It seems to me that such increases are not needed for an ordinary user. However, P40 Pro Plus will be taken by enthusiasts, for the rest there is a Samsung Galaxy S series and Apple iPhone “digital” Pro.
The video is cooler on the Huawei P40 Pro Plus, if only because here you can zoom in 10X. Better than this device, so no one takes pictures of the moon on video.
Bottom line: in terms of camera capabilities, of course, it’s better to take the Pro Plus.

Conclusion
Here are two of the most advanced photo and video capture devices. Further, everything will depend on whether you are ready to pay 100 rubles for 000x optics, since other parameters are not so important, in my subjective opinion. I think that the overpayment of 10 rubles is really for enthusiasts who want to get everything from their mobile friend.
I would wait for the release of the Huawei Mate 40/40 Pro and find out what the manufacturer offers, which is why you should not look at the current flagships. There is no reason to rush.
You already know the strengths. But what will you face when buying a Huawei P40 Pro or P40 Pro Plus?
- Weight and dimensions. Both are quite large and thick. This is partially offset by good ergonomics: it is pleasant to hold and use.
- Lack of GMS. Everything is clear here.
- Conversational speaker under the screen. It seems to be heard well, but I could not get used to it. Better to implement stereo.
- Large cutout for sensor and camera. Yes, the iPhone is even bigger, but there all the programs are written in such a way that in no way fall into this area. Google Android organizes this differently.
- Rounded corners of the screen.
Perhaps that’s all. Personally, the first and last points scare me away from the P40 Pro / Pro Plus. Still, 220 grams and 9 mm thickness are such themselves. And I wrote about the curved display many times.
What do you think the cameras will continue next year?
