Positioning
At the end of May 2020, the Honor brand introduced on the Russian market a new third-generation laptop MagicBook 15, aimed at “young and active users who need a universal tool for work and play.”
The laptop received a frameless screen with a diagonal of 15.6 inches, a light and thin aluminum alloy case, an AMD Ryzen 5 processor and a Radeon Vega 8 Graphics.
In addition, MagicBook 15 is equipped with advanced technology for instant data transfer between Magic-Link 2.0 devices for simultaneous use of a smartphone and laptop.
The presented model has joined the ecosystem of smart devices of the Honor brand under the concept of “1 + 8 + N” *, becoming an intermediate option between the relatively compact MagicBook 14 and the large MagicBook Pro with a 16-inch screen.
The laptop is already on sale, the prices are presented in the table with characteristics.
* Let me remind you that last summer, Huawei announced the “1 + 8 + N” strategy. Category “1” includes smartphones, “8” – laptops / tablets / TV / headphones / speakers / MK glasses / smart watches / cars, and “N” – mobile offices, smart homes, sports, health and so on. And all this is interconnected.
Appearance
The new Honor MagicBook 15 hardly differs from its older brother MagicBook Pro. They have a classic design without frills with simple shapes: the upper part is flat and abruptly transitions to the side edges, the inscription HONOR is engraved on it in the brand’s new font (in the previous generation, the text was made in small letters). The thickness is the same on all sides and is almost 17 mm. The bottom panel is equipped with rubber holders. In the same place there is an air vent and speakers.
The only difference between version 15 and 16 is that the edges and logo on the cover of the MagicBook 15 are machined with an automatic diamond cutting machine and shine with an azure blue color. This is noticeable from any light source and viewing angle.
Since the aspect ratio of the screen is 16: 9, the whole body is elongated and the sides are flat. For example, in the same MB16, the sides are slightly chamfered.
The device weighs 1 530 grams, which is quite normal for a similar device with a 15-inch screen diagonal. For example, the 14-inch MagicBook weighed 1.5 kg, the super-compact Huawei MateBook Pro X 1.4 kg, and the 16-inch MB 1.7 kg.
The case material is similar to what we saw in the MB Pro – aluminum, color gray (“space gray”). It looks solid, but the top cover flexes a little, in fact, as in the Pro version. The rest of the assembly is of high quality, there were no more questions.
There is a plastic panel on the back. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signals pass through it.
Hinges
Разъемы
The following elements are located on the left side of the case:
- 1x USB Type-C power connector
- 1x indicator of device operation and battery charge
- 1x USB Type-A 3.0
- 1x HDMI
On right:
- 1x USB Type-A 3.0
- 1x headphone / microphone combo jack
Let me remind you that in the Pro version there was another additional USB-A connector.
Keyboard and Touchpad
The keyboard is membrane, type – island with a small distance between the keys (2.5 mm). The buttons are 16.5 × 16.5 mm in size. The symbols on the keys are painted in white: the Latin alphabet is slightly larger than the Cyrillic alphabet. The function keys are the same color.
Unlike the MB Pro, the MB15 lacks backlighting. Only the FN and Caps buttons have a dotted glow.
The key travel is about two and a half millimeters. Pressing medium hard with locking position and light spring-loaded effect.
The area under the keyboard does not squeeze when pressed, which is good.
It is convenient to type on the keyboard thanks to the even key travel. Also, do not forget that there is room for the hands to the right and left of the touchpad. The MB Pro has even more, plus speakers are located there.
Below the keyboard is a large touchpad: it is slightly recessed into the body, the dimensions are large – 120×72 mm (the same as in the Pro version), the surface is matte, metal, presses and gestures are supported.
When touched and pressed, the touchpad does not backlash – good.
The power button, combined with the fingerprint scanner, is located on the upper right, and separately from the keyboard. It looks a little strange: a lonely button on an empty space.
When you start Windows, you don’t need to enter a password – you just need to touch the power button. The MagicBook Pro has the same feature. Works from any angle.
The original chip of the camera was spied on by the older generation: when you press a special button on top, the camera rises. The solution is cool, but in this position you remove your chin, and you cannot adjust the angle of the camera with the top cover.
For example, a group of my daughter’s kindergarten decided to have a video chat on Zoom. As a result, the child had to be squeezed between several pillows so that the interlocutors could see him somehow. But if the camera was at the top of the screen (like 90% of laptops), then you would just have to tilt the display.
Screen
This model has a 15.6-inch display diagonal. Frames on all sides are about 6 mm, and on the bottom – about 17 mm. The MagicBook had 7mm bezels and about 15mm at the bottom.
The physical size of the screen is 344×193 mm. The usable area is about 87%. The aspect ratio is 16: 9.
The surface is matte, non-touch, the matrix is made using IPS LCD technology, the resolution is 1920 × 1080 pixels, which corresponds to 141 PPI.
Of course, against the background of fancy screens in smartphones, the picture on the MagicBook Pro looks so-so in terms of details. Although, in general, I liked the image: the IPS panel is of high quality, the viewing angles are maximum, without distortion. Matrix is set to 100% sRGB.
The maximum brightness is only 225 cd / m2. This parameter is not enough for comfortable work in bright light, even in a room you want a higher brightness. For example, on my work monitor, the normal brightness is 300 cd / m2. Even with this value, I think that the brightness is chosen small.
Such an evil thing as PWM is absent even at minimum brightness. Among the settings there is “eye protection”: you can choose a color shade: warm, cold or neutral.
Bottom line: a good IPS screen with accurate sRGB calibration, but low brightness.
Working hours
The novelty is equipped with a 42 W * h Li-Pol battery (divided into three sections). There is no official data on the opening hours.
In my case (the maximum brightness is always), the laptop “lived” on average 5 hours when connected to Wi-Fi. Watching YouTube videos drained the battery in about 6 hours, simple toys in 1.5 hours. The maximum discharge was when encoding video: here the device was enough for a maximum of 1 hour.
In the kit you will find a USB-C to USB-C cable and a 5V / 2A, 9V / 2A, 12 / 2A, 15V / 3A or 20V / 3.25A (65W) AC adapter. A similar power adapter comes with almost all Huawei / Honor laptops. Up to 50% battery of Honor MagicBook 15 is charged in 30 minutes, up to 100% – in about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
“Iron”
Below is a table with brief parameters of the laptop hardware:
Processor | AMD Ryzen 5 3500U |
Integrated graphics | Radeon RX Vega 8 |
RAM memory | 8GB DDR4 (on system board) 2400MHz Dual Channel |
Built-in memory | 512GB NVMe PCIe SSD Samsung |
There are two configurations to choose from: with 256 GB of internal memory or 512 GB. I would take for 512 GB, because the difference is only 3 rubles. A volume of 000 will clog up very quickly, especially if the laptop will serve as more than a typewriter.
The AMD Ryzen 5 3500U chip contains 4 cores, the maximum frequency of each is up to 3.7 GHz, 8 threads, 12 nm process technology. Responsible for the graphics part is Radeon Vega 8 Graphics: 8 cores up to 1.2 GHz
The older version of MagicBook Pro uses the AMD Ryzen 5 3550H processor. Apparently, the difference between the chips lies only in the calculated thermal power: in the MB15 it is 15 W, and in the MB16 – 35 W.
Thus, the Honor MagicBook Pro is better able to handle tasks that load the processor for a long time. For example, when encoding a video, the Pro version showed the result in 2 minutes, and the younger version rendered the video 40 seconds longer. While the difference is small within short clips, a 20-minute video on MB15 is encoded in 26 minutes, and on MB16 in 20 minutes.
Not everything is so simple with games:
- CS: GO at low settings 150 (3550H) / 120 (3500U) fps
- Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege at high settings 48/43 fps
- The Witcher 3 at medium settings of 27/25 fps
- Wolfenstein II at medium settings 18/16 fps
The laptop copes with office tasks without much difficulty. The device starts up instantly – this is a couple of seconds from the moment you press the power button and the start screen appears with a password. This is facilitated by a very fast 256 GB SSD Samsung PM981A (MZ-VLB256B) PCI-E NVMe. Its speed is about 3500/2300 MB / s for reading / writing. Within the system, it was split into two logical drives: 80 GB (system) and 142 GB (data storage), with the remainder being occupied by “OEM” partitions.
When working with text, the laptop cooler was almost silent. Even when encoding video, the device emits a pleasant quiet rustling sound. The front panel temperature did not exceed 30 degrees, the back of the case was heated to a maximum of 42 degrees, and even if the measurements were taken near the ventilation grill.
There is no point in talking about wireless technologies here: everything is working fine. You can see the specifications in the table.
Wireless network | Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11a / b / g / n / ac, 2,4 GHz / 5 GHz, 2 × 2 MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0 |
Sound is output to two speakers located on the rear panel. The solution is not the best: when placing the laptop on a soft surface, the sound is muffled. For example, in MB Pro they are located on top.
The volume of the MB15 speakers is slightly above average, the quality is not bad. You can comfortably watch a movie at a distance of up to one and a half meters in a noisy environment.
The frequency range is approximately 80 Hz to 15 kHz. Low frequencies are almost inaudible, mostly mids are played. The stereo effect is heard well.
Impression
When I wrote a review of the Honor MagicBook 15, I involuntarily compared it to the main Windows laptop – the MagicBook Pro. I came to the unequivocal conclusion that the older version is much more interesting than the younger one.
Yes, the difference between them is 7 rubles, but for this money you get:
- Slightly larger diagonal
- Slightly thinner than the frame
- Higher matrix backlight brightness: 350 cd / m2 versus 220 cd / m2 for MB15
- Extra USB-A, and there are never enough of them
- Front-facing speakers (sound is not muffled, slightly louder and cleaner)
- Slightly faster processor in complex tasks
- Slightly faster drive write speed
On the side of the MagicBook 15, the price is lower, 170 grams less weight.
The difference in dimensions is scanty: 369×234 mm versus 357×229 mm, and the thickness is the same – 17 mm.
If you really want to be more compact, you should take a closer look at the Honor MagicBook 14. It measures 322x214x16 mm and weighs 1 grams. And the price is 380 rubles less. Therefore, I would highly recommend the Honor MagicBook Pro instead of the MagicBook 10.
Traditionally, the question is: what diagonal do you prefer in a laptop and why?
