In November last year, it became known that the European Parliament approved a new policy of mandatory labeling of gadgets with an assessment of maintainability. France became the first country to have such a marking since the beginning of 2021.
Devices are rated based on ease of disassembly, access to repair information, price and availability of spare parts. Nowadays, marking is mandatory on smartphones, laptops, washing machines, TVs and lawn mowers, but other devices will be added to the list in the future.
In the French online Apple store, ratings have appeared. The iPhone 12 mini, for example, received a 6,0 out of 10 possible points, and the iPhone 11 – 4,6 out of 10.
In terms of computers, the new MacBook Air with the M1 SoC scored 6,5 out of 10, and the MacBook Pro M1 got 5,6 out of 10.
It is logical that until the legislation takes effect in other countries, Apple will not index devices everywhere. In many cases, the score seems to be low, which does not correlate with the company’s global reputation for quality. But keep in mind that Apple does not support DIY repairs, which in most cases are in question.
