A few weeks ago, complaints about USB connectivity issues on systems with AMD Ryzen processors started popping up on the web. At the moment, there is no general solution, but the manufacturer has provided official recommendations that can resolve the problems that arise.
According to Reddit forum users, the problem manifests itself when low-speed devices such as mice, keyboards, and headsets intermittently shut down for no reason when using a USB 2.0 port. This has been observed on systems with Ryzen 3000 and Ryzen 5000 series processors using 500 and 400 series motherboards (X570, X470, B550, and B450).
As one of the users pointed out, he contacted AMD technical support, where he was given a number of recommendations, developed taking into account the feedback from users who faced the problem of USB ports. According to the resource Tom’s Hardware, these tips may not help everyone, but it looks like AMD is already approaching the root of the problem. In the meantime, the company offers:
- Make sure you are using the latest motherboard BIOS and reset all settings to factory defaults. For instructions on installing or updating the BIOS, visit the motherboard manufacturer’s website;
- Check the relevance of the build of Windows 10 and, if necessary, update to the latest version. For instructions on how to update Windows 10, you can refer to the article “Updating Windows 10” on the official Microsoft website;
- Make sure the system has the latest drivers for AMD chipsets. The latest version of the Ryzen chipset, numbered 2.13.27.501, can be downloaded from this link.
If you re-observe USB connectivity issues, AMD advises you to take the following steps:
- Switch the PCIe 4.0 bus mode in the BIOS settings to PCIe 3.0 mode;
- Disable the Global C-State feature in the BIOS.
The company advises to look for additional information on the BIOS settings of the motherboard in the technical manual of the motherboard.
As you can see, most of the tips are basic. Interestingly, AMD does not recommend removing USB ports and USB root hubs in Device Manager and then rebooting the system in its recommendations. Thus, some users were able to solve the problem with the USB connection. It seems that AMD, at the very least, has narrowed the search for the source of the problem, so it does not consider this advice effective.
