Qualcomm today announced Snapdragon Sound technology, which the company itself describes as a collection of software and hardware innovations in the field of sound. Its goal is to deliver audio quality on wireless models comparable to high-end wired headphones.

Snapdragon Sound will take advantage of the latest Qualcomm processors, the company’s Bluetooth chips and audio codecs such as aptX Adaptive for Hi-Fi audio playback up to 24-bit 96 kHz. It’s worth noting that the concept of high-quality wireless audio is not new to Android device manufacturers. Sony has made a significant contribution here with the introduction of LDAC technology, which can transfer three times more data than the standard SBC Bluetooth codec is capable of.

Qualcomm components are used in headphones from many well-known companies, including Bose, Jabra, 1More, Sennheiser, Audio-Technika and Anker. However, the company said that existing devices will not receive support for the new technology. The Snapdragon Sound badge will appear on the packaging of upcoming smartphones and audio devices in the next few months. It is known that the first two partners of Qualcomm under the Snapdragon Sound program will be Xiaomi and Audio-Technica.

Qualcomm says the Snapdragon Sound certification will mean more than just a device capable of producing high quality audio. It is reported that the focus will also be on improving audio quality during voice calls and reducing latency during games to 89 milliseconds. In addition, high stability of the connection is a priority.

It’s worth noting that today’s Snapdragon Sound launch announcement follows Spotify’s recent announcement that it will offer premium subscribers access to lossless streaming audio by the end of this year. Other popular services like Amazon Music already offer similar options.
