Since Apple has had significant success with its M1 computer processor, Qualcomm has decided to give it tangible competition in this area. The company is reportedly working on updating the Snapdragon 8cx platform, which is used in 2-in-1 devices based on Windows.
It’s no secret that the current generation of chipsets for Windows computers from Qualcomm is no match for the products of Intel, AMD or Apple. Devices based on these processors are able to cope only with undemanding tasks. We are not talking about any professional use. Last month resource WinFuture reported that Qualcomm is working on a more powerful chipset for Windows computers, model number SC8280, which is being tested in at least two variants.
It is reported that the new Snapdragon for computers will no longer contain energy efficient cores. Instead, it will use a combination of two clusters of high-performance cores at different clock speeds. One of the tested variants, the SC8280XP, has four high-performance Kryo Gold + cores clocked at 2,7 GHz and four Kryo Gold cores clocked at 2,43 GHz. This indicates that the new Qualcomm processors for computers will become more productive, but their power consumption may also increase.
It is also reported that a sample similar to the above-described chip is undergoing testing, but with a maximum frequency of 3 GHz. It includes an integrated NPU capable of processing up to 15 trillion operations per second. This chip is being tested on 14-inch laptops with 32GB of RAM, while the current Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 supports a maximum of 16GB of RAM.
Unfortunately, at the moment it is not yet known when the new Qualcomm computer processors will be presented, and even more so will appear in finished products.
