California-based startup Canoo has unveiled its electric pickup truck. This electric car, with its outlines resembling a toy or a child’s drawing, should enter the market no earlier than 2023. By then, it will have to compete with electric pickups Tesla Cybertruck, Hummer, Ford F-150 and Rivian.

Canoo has gone through many changes since the announcement of its first car. Now it is a public company, and its new leader has refocused on selling electric vans to various companies on its own technology platform. This does not mean that Canoo has finally given up on trying to produce cars for ordinary consumers. The newest pickup truck is clearly targeted at both businesses and casual buyers.

Canoo said it will start accepting pre-orders for its pickup this year, but did not disclose pricing details. The company is also said to be in talks to set up a “microfactory” in the US to make cars. The truck shows how Canoo is ready to develop the design of this car, first announced back in 2019 for sale by subscription only.

The Canoo pickup has several folding work surfaces, one in the nose of the vehicle and the other on the side of the body. You can extend the landing at the back to make the space even more. The storage compartment has 120 V sockets and USB connectors. The promotional images also feature a truck version with a roof rack, and even an Overlander version with camping trim and a pop-up tent. In general, the company made its car as versatile as possible.

According to recent filings, Canoo spent $ 47 million on research and development in 2018, $ 137 million in 2019, and $ 52 million during the first three quarters of 2020.

The Canoo truck will be built on the same platform as the other vehicles offered by the company, so it will largely offer the same performance in many configurations. The most expensive all-wheel drive pickup will have a power of about 600 horsepower and a range of more than 320 km on a single charge. The manufacturer believes that by the time of launch it will be able to extend the range to 480 km. The truck uses the same electronic braking and steering system that Canoo has developed for its other vehicles.
