Positioning
At the end of last year, Acer introduced a new product called the Porsche Design Acer Book RS. But broad sales in Russia began in January 2021.
As you might guess, the device was created in collaboration with the German brand Porsche Design and the Taiwanese company Acer. Feats like this are not new. For example, electronics manufacturer Huawei had both Watch GT2 and smartphones ranging from the Mate 10 to the Mate 40 with the Porsche Design nameplate.
And here it is worthwhile to understand that the price for a product (Huawei, Acer and other companies) with a Porsche Design prefix consists of two parts: the cost of the components and the German brand. For the latter, they will ask from 20% to 40% of the price of the gadget. Actually, that’s why Porsche Design Acer Book RS is now on store shelves for 200 rubles.
I wrote all this because I foresee the comments, they say, “Yes, I will buy for that kind of money …”. You are absolutely right – buy two, and maybe even three of these “pieces of iron” (sarcasm).
Such devices are bought by people who are into sports cars, or for some reason the potential buyer liked the design so much that he is ready to invest a lot of money in the gadget.
I think we figured out the positioning. What’s with the filling?
The Porsche Design Acer Book RS features an 7th Gen Intel Core-i11 processor with discrete GeForce MX350 graphics, 16GB RAM, 1TB storage, and a 14-inch FullHD IPS screen with touch control. That is, quite an ordinary good laptop. Add in at just 1.2kg, a carbon fiber trim on the top and an all-aluminum body. Beauty, isn’t it?
Graphic Design
This is what this model will be bought for – the design. However, in my humble opinion, the Acer Book RS doesn’t look cool enough. Yes, it has a carbon fiber insert on the top of the lid, yes, the entire body is made of high quality metal with the use of both glossy and matte elements, yes, there is a nice engraved Porsche Design lettering. But something is wrong with the laptop. I am probably distracted by the angular shapes that are not quite typical for the Porsche Design brand. Think of all Huawei Mate RS smartphones – sleek, with incredible ergonomics. And watches Monobloc or 1919 collection – smooth, with seamless lines, and bags and clutches – the same “cursive” and smooth.
You throw rotten tomatoes at me, but the Apple MacBook Pro looks more expensive.
However, the design is extremely strict and minimalistic. Probably older men and women will like it, because over the years, many more and more often begin to appreciate clear and functional design and are no longer ready to buy “clownish outfits”. Although, for some reason, for some reason, the image of the “king” of our stage surfaced in my memory: the uncle is 50+, and everyone walks with feathers ? Of course, this is an incorrect example, since show business is a completely special category, but nevertheless …
The top cover of Acer Book RS is flat, the front panel is made in the same way. Seen from the side, the body resembles the shape of an irregular trapezoid.
The top cover is matte, the bevel is glossy. But the lower part of the laptop case is made of rougher aluminum. Even the color of the panels is different – the top is silvery, the bottom is gray ..
Actually, that’s all the delights of this model in terms of design.
I repeat that this is my opinion and it may be different from yours.
Elements on the body
On the left side:
- Proprietary power connector;
- HDMI;
- USB Type-A 3.2 Gen 1;
- USB Type-C / Thunderbolt 4. You can connect a power adapter to charge the battery.
On the right side:
- Kensington lock;
- Battery charge indicator;
- Device operation indicator;
- USB Type-A 3.2 Gen 1;
- 3.5 mm jack, combo – for headphones and an external microphone.
On the front panel:
- HD camera;
- Two microphones.
On the bottom of the case there is a hole for resetting BIOS settings. On the right and left of the same part of the case, there are two speakers.
Warm air is discharged through the grill from the bottom and the back. Some of the heat goes into the screen, so the display gets hot under CPU load.
Keyboard
I don’t think that this device will be purchased by a person who writes a lot of texts. The positioning of the laptop is described above – a fashionable business gadget.
The island-type keyboard, buttons are made of slightly rough gray plastic. The dimensions are 15×15 mm, the height is 1.5 mm, the distance between the buttons is almost 4 mm, which is quite a lot for a laptop keyboard. I have a little less on my working PC.
The upper function buttons are very small – 13×7 mm.
And here I immediately want to note the keyboard backlight. It either lights up the buttons or it doesn’t. Moreover, the illumination of the upper row of Fn, due to the design features of the case, is dazzling. If the lower keys are made exactly under the grooves in the case, then the upper ones are too small, so there is empty space.
Well, since I am so nitpicking, I will note the extremely inconvenient location of the fingerprint scanner – it is built into the touchpad. What for? You have 30 percent of free space on the case. Embed, for example, a sensor in the power button – why steal space from the touchpad …
Returning to the keyboard. Its stroke is large, pressing is soft. In general, typing is quite convenient.
The touchpad measures 105×65 mm. The surface is smooth to the touch, the finger glides easily. The buttons are mechanical: the higher, the harder it is to press. The working area is approximately 105×50 mm.
The backlight is rather strange: it has no brightness levels, and even shines in the eyes. The scanner is built into the touchpad, the touchpad itself is mechanical. Well, that is, for a laptop for 50 – 000 rubles – ok, but not for a gadget for 70 rubles.
By the way, when you open the top cover of the Acer Book RS, its lower part rises. Not comme il faut, right!
In the piggy bank of the negative – the lack of a curtain on the front camera. All the same, before you is a business ultrabook, “security” should be at a high level. For example, the owner of a Porsche Cayenne shouldn’t stick the camera with stickers …
Last but not least, sorry: the camera is only HD. The device came out already in the “pandemic” time, it was necessary to build in at least FullHD – many are still sitting at home in video conferencing. It’s good that the viewing angle is large and there is no distortion.
Do not think that I am specifically looking for negative points in the device. I just keep the figure of 200 rubles in my head and understand that for that kind of money, an ultrabook should be close to ideal.
Screen
Before the Porsche Design Acer Book RS test, it seemed to me that the display of an expensive device had a resolution of at least 2K. Alas, we installed only FullHD (1920 × 1080 pixels). This fact is unclear to me. The diagonal is 14 inches, the IPS matrix is glossy, the aspect is 16: 9, the refresh rate is 60 Hz. The cost of such a matrix (AUO7490) is about 5 rubles. As far as I remember, a similar one is in the Acer Swift 000 (price about 5 rubles), which suspiciously resembles the Acer Book RS.
The manufacturer says the brightness is 340 cd / m2, I got 320 cd / m2 (Radex lupin device). It is enough to work even in sunny weather. It is said to have 100% sRGB coverage. The viewing angles are large, no problems.
Pixelation is not very noticeable, but 157 PPI is 157 PPI.
The screen is equipped with a touch layer. It’s good. Oleophobic coating of excellent quality.
Working hours
The battery in the new product is 56 Wh (11.61V 4821 mAh). Consists of three sections. Quite a typical value for most similar Ultrabooks. In my case, the device showed the usual values: about 5-6 hours in mixed operation mode (watching YouTube, typing), about 4 hours of watching only videos on KinoPoisk.
When the lid is closed, the device “sleeps” badly. It loses up to 30% of its capacity per day.
The set comes with two 65 W network adapters. One with a USB-C connector, the other with a proprietary one. The first one is too simple for a laptop for 200 rubles, and the other is quite pretty. Frankly, I did not understand the presence of two power supplies at the same time.
“Iron”
The novelty is powered by 7th generation Intel Core-i11 10 nm process technology. I will not describe the chipset in detail, I don’t think that our readers would like to delve into the jungle, plus or minus of identical Intel processors. Among the innovations is the integrated Intel Xe graphics, although in this model it is not very interesting, since the Acer Book RS is equipped with discrete graphics NVIDIA GeForce MX350 with a memory capacity of 2 GB.
Frankly speaking, in practice I don’t quite understand the meaning of the MX350. If you play with toys, then it’s too weak, you won’t be able to use it in 3D modeling, for video processing – so-so.
Again, the Acer Book RS ultrabook is not about coding or games, it is for business: beautiful PowerPoint pictures, fast surfing of sites, a set of short texts, just a beautiful “machine” on the desktop.
Nevertheless, in the tests Cinebench R20 is gaining about 2000 pts (if that tells you anything), in GeekBench 5 – 1500/5800 (single / multi) and 9000 (CUDA).
The new product has 16 GB of RAM, it is soldered on the board with four Micron chips.
It’s more interesting to talk about storage devices. After all, they can be different even in the same model range. In this case, we are dealing with a 530TB Western Digital SN1 NVMe SSD. Its speed is not the most impressive – 2300/2000 MB / s.
I tried using Acer Book RS as a video device. In general, I did it: there is a lot of memory, the drive is normal, the processor is vigorous, there is discrete graphics. If your video is in FullHD resolution and no effects are applied to it, then 1 minute of video will take 1 minute to encode in H.264. By the way, give or take the same amount of time required for encoding, for example, Honor MagicBook Pro on AMD Ryzen 5 3550H and 8 GB of RAM.
I can’t call it a noisy Porsche Design Acer Book RS. In most situations, I have not heard coolers. And if there was a sound, it was pleasant and quiet.
The device warms up decently, but only in really difficult tasks. Most of the heat is felt at the top near the screen. The metal panel heats up there to 45-50 degrees. Well, the lower central part of the case also heats up to 45 degrees. The keyboard area remains slightly warm.
From the nice little things: the ultrabook works with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1.
If we are talking about speakers, then they are, to put it mildly, simple. Sound like a can: no mids or lows – very flat high frequency sound. This upset me greatly. The same MateBook X produced a sound that was bombastic for its size.
The camera here is HD, the quality is comparable.

Impressions
Struggling to understand the new Porsche Design Acer Book RS. If we approach it from the design side, then there are not so many questions: here you have carbon, a lot of high-quality aluminum, and the Porsche Design lettering. But if you dig a little deeper, a very strange picture opens up:
- appearance is strong for an amateur;
- with the opening of the top cover, the lower part of the case also rises;
- the function buttons on the keyboard are small;
- backlight with one level of brightness, the top row blinds the eyes;
- the finger scanner is built into the touchpad;
- the camera has no curtain, but HD resolution;
- drive speed is average;
- screen with FullHD resolution;
- speakers sound so-so.
Of the benefits:
- easy;
- compact;
- there are all the necessary connectors;
- the keyboard is convenient for typing texts;
- screen colors are calibrated accurately.
If the Acer Book RS cost around 120 rubles, I probably would not pay attention to trifles. But at a price of 000 rubles, the device should be close to ideal: a fast disc, high screen resolution, a good video card, high-quality keyboard backlighting, and so on.
Take, for example, Huawei MateBook X: it weighs 1 kg, a 3000 × 2000 pixel screen, excellent 4 speakers, a touchpad with vibration feedback technology, the keyboard brightness has 2 gradations, a finger scanner in the power button, the drive is very fast, the camera is hidden under the keyboard. Price – 120 rubles. This is just an example of a fashion device.
If we take the models from Acer, then we will get the Acer Swift 5 for 140 rubles. In fact, a complete analogue of the Acer Book RS.
Other brands offer this:
- ASUS Zenbook 14 Ultralight… Price – 120 rubles. Intel Core i000 7G1165 processor, 7GB RAM, 16 ” screen, 14 x 1920 pixels, 1080TB storage, and NVIDIA GeForce MX1 graphics. Weight – 450 kg.
- MSI Summit E14… Price – 130 rubles. Intel Core i000 7G1165 processor, 7GB RAM, 16 inch 13.4 x 1920 pixel screen, 1080TB storage, and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1Ti MAX-Q graphics. Weight 1650 kg.
- Dell XPS 13… The price is about 200 rubles. Intel Core i000 7G1165 processor, 7 GB RAM, 16 inches 13.4 × 3840 pixels screen, 2400 TB storage.
- Lenovo Yoga Slim 9-14… The price is about 200 rubles. Same specs as Dell.
In general, the Porsche Design Acer Book RS is undoubtedly an expensive and curious “machine”, but for special connoisseurs of the Porsche Design brand.
