Titan is the only object in the solar system besides Earth where liquid can definitely exist on the surface. Scientists believe that directly liquid water can hide on the moon of Saturn under an ice shell.
The authors of the new study said that water from the bowels of Titan sometimes has to mix with hydrocarbons at the surface. This happens due to collisions with other bodies: then cracks are formed.
Scientists even simulated a collision that caused the largest crater on Titan. It reaches 425 kilometers across. The age of the crater reaches a billion years. The researchers calculated that the impact energy was sufficient for the appearance of a liquid water lake on the surface. For a million years, it has frozen.
Scientists believe that a million years could be enough for primitive life to begin.
