The past year has been characterized by a surge in demand for server components as the economy accelerated to go digital amid the pandemic. According to the head of SK hynix, the data center segment will double by 2025, which will allow the company to make good money on the sale of memory chips.
According to CEO Lee Seok-hee, new growth factors for the server segment will be the expansion of 5G networks, the development of artificial intelligence systems and automatically controlled vehicles. The number of data centers of global scale, according to forecasts of the management of SK hynix, will double to 2025 units by 1060. The corresponding infrastructure will be in demand both by the development of social networks and online games, and by agriculture or automated production.
According to the head of SK hynix, the total volume of structured and unstructured data will grow exponentially in the coming years. Data center needs for DRAM and NAND are set to grow at an “alarming” pace, the company executive is not shy about saying. Over the next five years, SK hynix will spend $ 4,2 billion on the purchase of ASML-branded EUV scanners, which will help the company master more advanced lithographic memory technologies. As noted, $ 9 billion will be spent on the purchase of Intel’s China facility, which currently manufactures 3D NAND memory. The Korean manufacturer intends to increase the reliability of DRAM chips twenty-fold to meet the demands of the automotive segment, where autopilot systems are being actively implemented. In the production of solid-state memory such as 3D NAND, the number of layers will be increased from the current 176 to 600 pieces.
