Recently, it was reported on the web that Apple’s VR headset will receive advanced eye tracking capabilities. Reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said today that Apple is developing an ultra-short focal length hybrid lens for this purpose, which will allow the device to weigh less than 150 grams.
In a research note, Kuo mentioned that modern VR headsets typically weigh over 300 grams and come in a bulky form factor. Apple wants to rid its device of these shortcomings. Kuo expects the California-based headset to feature an ultra-short focal hybrid Fresnel lens. Thanks to the sawtooth profile, Fresnel lenses are much lighter and more compact than conventional optics with the same characteristics. By the way, Apple Glass lenses will be made of lightweight plastic.
The analyst believes that the weight of Apple’s VR headset will not exceed 150 grams, which will be a huge advantage over similar devices currently in existence. Kuo also points out that the Cupertino company will use Micro-OLEDs in the device to compensate for the decrease in brightness caused by the use of Fresnel lenses.
Earlier this month, an analyst announced that Apple’s VR headset will be equipped with 15 cameras. The device is expected to hit the market in 2022 for about $ 1000.
