Created by former Apple Chief Designer Jony Ive and acclaimed designer Marc Newson, the rare Leica camera prototype will be auctioned in June. The device, which is described as being in “B +” condition, has a starting price of € 100 (about $ 118), and auction house Leitz Photographica estimates it will sell for € 200-250 ($ 235-295).
The prototype was made during the development of the Leica M for (RED) single camera, which was sold at a charity auction in 2013 for $ 1,8 million. Although the design of the final product had much in common with the Apple Mac Pro of the time, this prototype seems to have a smooth reflective surface that is clearly excellent at collecting fingerprints.
The prototype is described as one of the final stages of design and is equipped with an Apo-Summicron 2/50 mm ASPH lens. However, there is no mention of whether it actually functions as a camera.
Here is the full description from the Leitz Photographica auction: “Beautifully crafted aluminum body with matching lens Apo-Summicron 2/50 mm ASPH shows the distinctive features for which both designers are renowned. Only one finished camera was created and sold at auction in 2013 for an astonishing $ 1,8 million! The prototype, which we are pleased to offer, shows the final stage of development, when the camera took its final shape after hundreds of prototypes of parts were made and tested. This is a fine example of design and a very special opportunity for Leica collectors.! “
At the time, Leica stated that a total of 561 models and nearly 1000 prototype parts were produced during the camera design process. The final version of the Leica M for (RED) was sold along with over 40 other items at an auction that raised about $ 26 million in total for charity. Later, Mr. Newson joined Apple to work under the leadership of Jony Ive.
