Sony Interactive Entertainment on its website has officially announced the imminent closure of the PlayStation Store digital store for PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita and PlayStation Portable.
The PlayStation Store will be deactivated on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable on July 2, 2021, and on the PlayStation Vita on August 27. Users will then be unable to purchase digital content for these systems, including games and add-ons. This applies to both the web version of the PlayStation Store and the store on the consoles themselves.
It is noteworthy that on the PlayStation Portable, access to the PlayStation Store was disabled back in 2016, but games for the console could be purchased on compatible systems such as the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.
Note that users will still be able to download previously purchased games and add-ons for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita and PlayStation Portable by opening the download list. This list also includes projects that you received through a PlayStation Plus subscription.
Finally, Sony Interactive Entertainment has added that as of June 28, 2021, PlayStation Vita users will no longer be able to use the messaging feature.
The company does not name the reasons for the shutdown of services on outdated PlayStation consoles.
