Fashion magazine suspends senior editor over sexual harassment claims

Both said they initially kept quiet about the incidents for fear of being ostracised from the fashion industry.

Max Clark, an experienced fashion editor and stylist at i-D, was suspended last week pending an independent investigation involving outside counsel.

Mr Clark, who has worked for i-D since 2014 and has styled cover shoots for British Vogue, as well as campaigns for Burberry and Ralph Lauren, strongly denies any allegations of sexual harassment or any other form of sexual misconduct.

Founded in 1980, the bi-monthly magazine has established itself as a bible of the fashion industry and has featured Madonna, Naomi Campbell, Scarlett Johansson and Rihanna.

The new allegations come after a sexual harassment scandal at i-D’s parent company, Vice Media, in 2017 – the year the Havey Weinstein revelations prompted the global #MeToo movement against sexual harassment of women.

One of the women alleging abuse wrote online last week: “Just in case anyone wanted any confirmation that the #metoo movement changed absolutely nothing.”

She claimed that Vice knew of more than 15 women who had complained of harassment, although the company disputes that the total is that high.

It is understood that many of the women held junior positions at the time of the alleged harassment.

One alleged victim wrote on social media: “All of them [complainants] felt too scared to come forward themselves due to not wanting to risk their place in the industry.

“We all know fashion assistants are on poor pay and work in precarious conditions and it was not something they felt that they could do.”

She added that a senior figure had “used his position of power to harass through sending unsolicited d— pics, unsolicited sexual messages.”

The second woman to go public, who was still on probation at i-D during the alleged incident following the 2016 industry event, said her “fashion editor” had “barged himself into my room only wearing his underwear, refusing to leave or get out and demanded he stayed in bed with me”.

She added: “At this point I was six weeks into my role, on probation and was terrified that if my flatmate called the police I’d get fired and lose my job.

“He was so far up in the fashion industry and there’s no way anyone would ever believe me.”

A spokesman for Vice said it was not aware of complaints of sexual harassment against any other members of staff and only Mr Clark had been suspended.

Mr Clark’s listing on the website of his management company Artistry has been removed, as has his Instagram profile.

Artistry said in a statement: “We operate a zero-tolerance policy for any allegations of this nature and we will not represent/promote any person under such serious investigation.”

A spokesman for Max Clark said: “Mr Clark denies any allegations of sexual harassment or any other form of sexual misconduct in the strongest of terms and will use all legal avenues available to him to clear his name.”

A spokesman for Vice said: “We are taking these allegations extremely seriously and are handling them according to our established standards and processes.

“We retained an independent, outside investigator to investigate the claims and in order to not compromise the integrity of the investigation, we are fairly limited in what we can say at this stage.

“What we can unequivocally say is that we strive to maintain a work environment in which all individuals are treated with respect and dignity, and as such we immediately took the appropriate steps to ensure we are providing a safe working environment for our employees and partners.”
