Pope Francis indirectly criticized Russia in his Sunday address in St. Peter’s Square. In particular, for the “barbarously destroyed” Mariupol during a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Francis is reported to have called the Russian war against Ukraine a “terrible regression of mankind” and said the invasion made him “suffer and weep.”
At the same time, he called for the creation of humanitarian corridors to evacuate people trapped at the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol.
In addition, during his midday blessing, Francis indirectly criticized Russia, stating that Mariupol had been “barbarously shelled and destroyed.”
Recall that during the two months of Russia’s war against Ukraine, Pope Francis asked Russian President Vladimir Putin three times to provide a humanitarian corridor for the evacuation of the civilian population from Mariupol. However, Putin replied that he could not guarantee his safety.
