Since February 24, the beginning of a full-scale war against Russia, Ukraine has completely refused to supply Russian nuclear fuel.
Previously, Ukraine purchased part of the nuclear fuel from Russian TVEL, and the other was supplied by the American company Westinghouse from Sweden. However, since February 24, the situation has changed dramatically.
This was announced by the head of NNEGC “Energoatom” Petr Kotin in an interview with Forbes Ukraine.
“Since the beginning of the war, we have completely abandoned Russian nuclear fuel, but we still have a large stock in our warehouses, which we will use over the next five to six years,” he said.
According to Kotin, over the next two years, Westinghouse has promised to increase production to the amount that Ukraine needs.
He also noted that Ukraine is working on the development of its own nuclear fuel for Ukrainian nuclear power plants, because its own production is much cheaper than imports.
During the two months of the war, the national energy company suffered losses of UAH 36 billion due to the actions of the Russian invaders. This includes reduced production and damage to nuclear power plant equipment and infrastructure. In addition, since the beginning of the war, Energoatom has been operating at only half its capacity.
Recall that Energoatom received permission to commission a storage facility for spent nuclear fuel.
