Chief Rabbi of Russia Berl Lazar called on Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to apologize for saying that “Hitler had Jewish blood.”
He added that such statements by the diplomat of the aggressor state are inappropriate.
He said this in a commentary to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
“I don’t think I can give advice to the head of Russian diplomacy, but it would be nice if he apologized to the Jews and simply admitted his mistake. I think that then it would be possible to consider the incident resolved and flip the page,” Lazar said.
Recall that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called the Jews “the most bitter anti-Semites.” Traditionally, he repeated Kremlin propaganda that Nazis were operating in Ukraine and stated that Adolf Hitler was of Jewish origin.
“What kind of Nazism can there be if he (Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky) is a Jew? I could be wrong, but Adolf Hitler also had Jewish blood. It doesn’t mean anything at all. The wise Jewish people say that the most bitter anti-Semites are usually Jews,” he said. Lavrov.
With this statement, the politician caused a diplomatic scandal not only in Ukraine, but also in Israel. In turn, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said that the “anti-Semitic attacks” by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov towards the President of Ukraine and the Jews are “absolutely unacceptable.”
Also, German government spokesman Steffen Hebestrait called Lavrov’s statements when he called the Jews “the most bitter anti-Semites” and compared Zelensky with Hitler “absurd.”
