"He's almost ready": Ukrainian general believes that Putin can launch a nuclear strike

Russian President Vladimir Putin is almost ready to press the “nuclear button”, although he understands what this can turn out to be for the state and for him personally.

Back in 2014, Russia decided: if NATO countries stand up for Ukraine, the Russian Federation will use tactical nuclear weapons.

Retired Ukrainian lieutenant general Igor Romanenko spoke about this in an interview with the Ukraine 24 YouTube channel.

“He is almost ready (to press the red button – ed.) , although he understands that this can turn into a lot, and not only Russia. Russia is like that, he has been reigning there for 20 years, but directly to his family, his children. Fundamentally, this is international pressure, a decision has already been made. Putin has gone for broke and should be fully responsible for this,” Romanenko said.

He noted that back in 2014, Russia decided: if NATO countries intervene and stand up for Ukraine, then the Russian Federation will use tactical nuclear weapons.

“It’s in his (Putin’s – ed.) head. The question is how to neutralize it and prevent it. There is corresponding progress here,” the lieutenant general noted.

He recalled that a month and a half ago, at the summit of NATO member countries, the main goal was not to drag the Alliance into Russia’s war against Ukraine, so that it would not escalate into a nuclear war.

“And now they (NATO countries – ed.) have already gained strength, learned from Ukraine, so they can answer Putin:” You have scarecrows there, we know about them, but you know that we will not allow this, and you will regret it, your entourage, your relatives and the state as a whole,” Romanenko expressed his opinion.

He also spoke about his predictions of when the war in Ukraine could end and peace come.

“In order to answer this question, one must understand that there are questions about when the truce will come – this is the only thing we can talk about for now. And this, I think, will happen this year, in two or three months, in my opinion. And the question of peace – (peace) can only come when we win with our allies,” Romanenko said.

Recall, on the eve of the head of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Bob Menendez, said that Putin could use nuclear weapons to “save face” against the background of the fact that the Russian army did not have significant success in the war with Ukraine.
