Justifying the war and spreading fakes: Britain imposed new sanctions against Kremlin propagandists and media

Great Britain on Wednesday, May 4, expanded the list of restrictive measures against Russia and its citizens for aggression against Ukraine.

The new sanctions will mean that Russian businesses will no longer be able to benefit from world-class British accounting, consulting and PR services, which account for 10% of Russian imports in these sectors.

This is stated in a press release from the British government.

As British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss explains, Russia is heavily dependent on Western service companies for the production and export of manufactured goods, and today’s measures will further increase the economic pressure on Putin.

“Doing business with the Putin regime helps fund a war machine that is causing untold suffering across Ukraine. Cutting Russia’s access to British services will increase pressure on the Kremlin and ultimately help ensure Putin’s failure in Ukraine,” the British foreign secretary said.

Britain is also imposing sanctions on 63 individuals and entities from Russia, many of whom are linked to Russia’s main propaganda media organizations. Their assets will be frozen and they will be banned from entering Britain.

Technology and Digital Economy Minister Chris Philp said that the propagandists of Channel One were under sanctions. The channel is notorious for spreading disinformation in Russia, justifying Putin’s illegal invasion as a “special military operation.” War correspondents who joined Russian troops in Ukraine were sanctioned:

  • Evgeny Piddubny, war correspondent of the All-Russian State Television and Radio Company
  • Alexander Kots, war correspondent for the Russian newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda.
  • Dmitry Steshin, Russian journalist, special correspondent for Komsomolskaya Pravda.

Other propaganda organizations subject to sanctions:

  • All-Russian State Television and Radio Broadcasting , a major state television and radio company.
  • The InfoRos news agency , which spreads destabilizing disinformation about Ukraine, allegedly has ties to Russian intelligence agencies.
  • SouthFront, a disinformation site that spreads false information trying to justify Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
  • Fundation Strategic Culture , an online magazine spreading misinformation about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, including the role of Russian troops in killing civilians in Bucha.

“The UK will continue to work closely with social media and allies to identify, expose and counter the Kremlin’s disinformation operation,” the UK government said in a statement.

As reported, on Wednesday, May 4, the head of the European Commission presented the sixth package of sanctions against Russia for its military aggression against Ukraine. Among the restrictions are the oil embargo, the disconnection of several more Russian banks from SWIFT, and the ban on state news broadcasters of the Russian Federation.
