Sooner or later, oil and gas will fall under sanctions.
European Council President Charles Michel said that the proposal of the European Commission regarding the sixth package of sanctions with an oil embargo on Russia because of the war it unleashed against Ukraine will be supported by all member states of the European Union.
Interfax-Ukraine writes about this.
“I can assure you that I am working very hard with my team and with my colleagues to make sure that we can take a unified position on the proposal before the Commission in a very short time,” he said.
He noted that in the past “there have been some systematic fears that we will not be able to be united.”
“At the same time, we systematically managed to take a unified position. And, of course, this required some kind of negotiations, discussions, because we need the support of 27 governments. A few weeks ago, I publicly stated in the European Parliament that sooner or later oil and gas will fall under sanctions. This is an important step. The Commission has put proposals for sanctions on the table, but it is the governments, it is the Council that makes the decision,” stressed the President of the European Council.
Recall, on May 4, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen presented the sixth package of sanctions against Russia for aggression against Ukraine. Among the restrictions are the oil embargo, the disconnection of several other Russian banks from SWIFT, and the ban on state news broadcasters.
