Almost three hundred people, including a 5-month-old baby, hid in a school basement in a village in the Luhansk region from the first days of the war until they were found by the military.
For almost three months, 300 people in the Luhansk region sat in the basement of a school without communication, light and heat, and because of the continuous bombing of the Russians, they already despaired that they would survive. They were rescued from shelling by the Ukrainian military – first they were taken to a safe zone, and then they even found shelter in Transcarpathia, according to TSN .
Daria hugs her five-month-old son to her chest, who has been living in the basement with his mother under shelling since the beginning of the war. Without light, heat, and all day without food. How they survived with the kids – the woman still does not understand.
“I run and hear fragments cracking on the roofs behind me. We fell, then again quietly and ran again,” she says, as if under shelling, with two small children, she fled to the shelter of a rural school.
After the Rashists began to bomb and cover the houses with artillery, all the villagers hid in this basement. Nadezhda was also sitting here with her four cats. She remembers how she hid from the Nazis 80 years ago. “I am experiencing a third war. In 41, the Germans did not do this. The Germans evacuated the population, and then they fired, and these people shoot at living people,” says Nadezhda Sharpak.
A small village in the Luhansk region has been under constant shelling since the first days of the war. Locals say the Russians deliberately hit private homes. Once again, people were even afraid to look out of the school basement. Every time they went for food, they risked their lives. “The shops are no longer open. What they had, they ate. They came out of the cellars and cooked food on fires,” people recall.
Galina’s house was destroyed by Russian soldiers on her 85th birthday. “The bomb fell right into the cellar, such a funnel … with a diameter of 5 meters. I then go, I do not know where to take shelter. Oh, thanks to that damned Putin for such a birthday present to me,” the woman cries.
Almost three hundred villagers no longer hoped for salvation, and fleeing under constant shelling meant certain death. The Ukrainian military rescued people. When they entered the village, they began to look for residents, after empty houses they decided to check the school basement.
“They entered the school, and there they found people in the basement. The children were very afraid because they were in uniform. He said that he and his friend were forced to take off their bulletproof vests, and only then the children approached them and started playing with them,” says volunteer Diana, whose husband is a fighter of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and who was the first to come across frightened people.
He immediately called his wife on the phone so that she would look for shelters for people in Transcarpathia. Meanwhile, the military was thinking about how to take people out.
“As we were taken out, everything was torn before our eyes. They shot at the cars, shrapnel went … They drove out with the kids and the shrapnel flew through the car, ”people recall.
All the evacuees not only made it to safety alive, but escaped injury. Already here, in Transcarpathia, they come to their senses from what they have experienced. With their rescuers, now at the forefront, communicate by phone. “I told you that everything will be fine. We will try to make sure that you return home soon, ”the fighters say.
But after the victory, everything will have to be built almost from scratch at home. After the arrival of the Russian “liberators” in the village, not a single surviving house remained.
