The US Institute for the Study of War predicts that in the Kharkiv direction, the Armed Forces of Ukraine will move towards the border with the Russian Federation in the coming days or weeks.
They note that the counter-offensive of the Ukrainian defenders to the north-east of Kharkov has made significant progress , which may indicate the imminent liberation of all the occupied territories of the region.
This is discussed in the analysis of the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) dated May 7.
In order to slow down the offensive actions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Kharkiv direction, the Russian army can carry out a limited withdrawal. As previously reported, Russian troops destroyed three bridges.
Also, according to the analysis of American specialists, it is unlikely that Russian troops will begin to return the dismissed Ukrainian settlements in the north-eastern part of Kharkov.
“Armies usually destroy bridges only if they have basically decided that they will not try to cross the river in the other direction in the near future. Therefore, it is unlikely that Russian forces will begin operations in the near future to return the northeastern outskirts of Kharkov liberated by Ukrainian troops “, the message says.
Previously predicted by ISW, the Ukrainian counter-offensive is forcing Russian units intended for deployment elsewhere to redeploy to the Kharkiv front to stop Ukrainian attacks. Given the current pace of Ukrainian advances, Russian forces may not be able to prevent Ukrainian forces from reaching the Russian border, even with additional reinforcements.
“Ukrainian forces do not directly threaten Russian communications with Izyum, but the counteroffensive demonstrates promising opportunities and may create conditions for further offensive operations in the north-east of the Kharkiv region,” American analysts say.
Recall that during the counter-offensive in the Kharkiv region, the Armed Forces of Ukraine destroyed the latest tank of the Russian Federation , which they dubbed “the best in the world.”
