History repeats itself not only in the way the enemy was portrayed in Nazi Germany. And so now – Russian propaganda depicts Ukrainians, but – in offensive battles with which the Russian army tried to take Kyiv. They sharpened – in the same vicinity of the capital, where during the Second World War the Lyutizh bridgehead was deployed, and the grandchildren of the then defenders of Ukraine opposed the invaders.
The commander of the 72nd separate mechanized brigade named after Cherny Zaporozhtsev Alexander Vdovichenko led the brigade defending Kyiv. And his grandfather fought in the Soviet army against Nazism, according to TSN .
The small village of Moshchun could become a gateway to Kyiv for the occupiers. The Gostomel airfield, where enemy troops landed from the beginning of a full-scale invasion, is here a few kilometers away, and in the forests, across the Irpen River, the Russians deployed a pontoon crossing, hiding behind artillery shots.
Here they threw units of the troops, which in Russia were considered the most elite. But the Ukrainian military showed that they are better. With their courage, experience of war and the latest weapons. “We outnumber the enemy 10 times by fighting for our land, for our children and the future, and with these weapons at times, because they are the latest and most technologically advanced. But everything needs people,” says the military man.
This attempt to storm Kyiv pretty much echoes the battles during World War II on the outskirts of the capital. Alexander Vdovichenko not only read about them in history books, but also heard from his grandfather, who then fought. In 1943, it was in these forests that the Lutizhsky bridgehead was deployed, and references to those battles are still here. “Pillbox number 510. Definitely, there were both Ukrainians and Russians in this pillbox. They fought against Nazism and fascism. And now we are, as they say, with an older brother. But this is not an older brother, they are beggars. Horde. Absolute evil,” adds the man.
A solid concrete building inside, pierced with reinforcement, then saved the defenders of Ukraine from the German Nazis. Now it has served as a good shelter from their Russian invaders. “People run across the road here. And they moved in the direction of the village of Moshchun,” says the fighter.
And their Russians poured in almost non-stop, sparing neither the civilian home nor their lives. All the terrible crimes of the occupiers against Ukrainians are already being minted in world history under the name “rashism”. It signifies the ideology not only of the Kremlin’s power, but also of Russian society. Alexander is sure that if his grandfather had caught this war, he would have been on the side of Ukraine. He was definitely proud of his grandson, who chose to become an officer in the armed forces.
Alexander’s War began in 2014. And even then he knew that the decisive battle for Ukraine was yet to come. “We have defended Kyiv. There is a war ahead. A difficult war,” he says.
But we have a significant advantage not only in the latest weapons and world support for Ukraine. And above all, in people who know for sure that their families and home are behind them.
“This is our people’s war. If we stand, and we stand against this evil creeping on our land, then we will live in a niche. Like people,” the military man adds.
