The day before, a number of British and American media, citing intelligence sources, wrote that Putin , due to the failures that the Russian army is suffering, could declare war on Ukraine or announce mobilization. Putin did not make such statements, other statements were made, and the speech was short. In particular, Putin said that the Donbass militias, together with the RF Armed Forces, are fighting on “their” land.

“These days you are fighting for our people in the Donbass, for the security of our Motherland of Russia. Russia gave a preventive rebuff to aggression, it was a forced, timely and only right decision. Today, the Donbass militias, together with the Russian army, are fighting on their own land. I appeal to the Russian servicemen and Donbass militias, you are fighting for your homeland, for its future, so that there is no place in the world for executioners and punishers,” Putin addressed the military.

In addition, he stressed that “Russia has always advocated the creation of a system of equal and indivisible security.”

During his speech , Putin complained that the collective West did not provide Russia with “security guarantees” and that the Russian Federation “had no choice” but to attack Ukraine.

“Last December, we proposed to conclude an agreement on security guarantees. All in vain, the NATO countries did not want to hear us. Openly, preparations were underway for a punitive operation in the Donbass. A threat was created directly at our borders. A clash with neo-Nazis was inevitable,” Putin said. speaking at the parade in Moscow.

Speaking about the memory of those who died in the Great Patriotic War, Putin also mentioned those who died in Odessa in 2014.

“Today we bow our heads before the memory of those whose lives were taken by the Great Patriotic War. We bow our heads before the memory of the martyrs of Odessa, who were burned alive in the House of Trade Unions in May 2014. Before the memory of the elderly, women and children of Donbass – civilians who died from shelling, barbaric strikes by neo-Nazis,” he said.

Recall that on May 2, 2014 in Odessa, during street confrontations, 6 protesters were killed from gunshot wounds, another 42 people died as a result of a fire in the Odessa House of Trade Unions. Russia took advantage of the tragedy in its favor, presenting it in the media as a consequence of the attitude of Ukrainians towards Russians and Russian-speakers.

It is worth noting that every day Russia suffers losses in the war against Ukraine. As of May 9, the total combat losses among the personnel of the Russian invaders amounted to about 25.6 thousand people, the General Staff reported.
