Any sponge consists of two parts – foam rubber and a rigid strip glued to it. This hard part is called Scotch Brighton or the abrasive part. First of all, attention should be paid to the color not of the foam rubber, but of this abrasive part. The color of the abrasive part is an indicator of the rigidity of the sponge . It is the color of this hard layer, and not foam rubber , that informs about the purpose of the sponge and its possible use.

Understanding what the color of the abrasive part signals, you can successfully use it to achieve cleanliness of the dish and not damage it with an overly hard surface of the sponge. The abrasive part is always a harder material, which is used, for example, to remove scale or burnt product residues.

Usually, sponges are chosen not by the color of the abrasive part, but by some other parameters, for example, the size of the washing area, the rigidity of the foam itself, and its quality. And as a rule, they do not pay attention to the color of a rigid strip glued to the foam rubber.

Yellow and green sponges are the most common sponges.

The yellow scotch-brighton circle provides gentle care. Such a sponge can wash glassware, crystal, porcelain. A sponge with a yellow layer is distinguished by the absence of abrasive particles, so such a sponge will not be able to wash off carbon deposits or dried dirt. Such models are made specifically for cleaning delicate materials.

Green color indicates that the abrasive part of the sponge is very hard. With the help of such a sponge, you can easily clean frozen fat, burnt food and the remains of already dried food. With such a sponge, you should be careful, there is a risk of damaging the enamel.

However, there are three more colors to indicate sponge hardness, which are less common.

The black color indicates the maximum density of the viscose and the content of abrasives. Such sponges are designed to remove carbon deposits and difficult stains and cannot be used on delicate surfaces. Many housewives do not use black scotch brite for dishes at all. Most often, these sponges are used to wash the toilet and bathtubs, sinks.

The blue color of the strip indicates a soft surface, this sponge is next in hardness to yellow. The model can be used to wash glassware, but it may not cope with strong stains or outdated food residues.

The red or orange color of the abrasive part allows you to wipe off dried food, it can be used to wash enamel and teflon. Such sponges can scrub off serious dirt on delicate materials.

It is worth noting that the shades of scotch-brite may depend on the manufacturer. Therefore, in order not to get confused, it is more convenient to use sponges from one manufacturer. If the house has a lot of dishes made of delicate materials, it is worth buying some yellow and red sponges. For washing ordinary cups, plates, metal pans and pots without a non-stick layer – sponges with green scotch-brite. Black sponges are a must have for removing difficult stains.
