Hungary will support an oil embargo if it only applies to oil that is transported by ships.
At the same time, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said that the embrago should not affect transit through the pipeline.
This is reported by the Hungarian public broadcaster Hirado .
According to the minister, the EU proposal in its current form “would cause enormous damage to Hungary” as it would completely destroy the country’s energy security, which “stands on a stable basis.”
Szijjarto stressed that a complete embargo on Russian oil would lead to an increase in fuel prices by about 55-60%. In addition, Hungarian experts expect that the price of gasoline and diesel fuel will be at least 700 and 800 forints (about 59 and 67 hryvnias), respectively, which will also stir up prices for other Hungarian products.
“We expect such a proposal not only for the conversion of our refineries by $100 million, but also for increasing the capacity of the oil pipeline to Hungary because of Croatia by $100 million and the future of the entire Hungarian economy,” the Hungarian Foreign Minister said.
According to Szijjártó, for this it is necessary to modernize Hungary’s energy supply structure by several billion euros.
As a result, Hungary stated that it would support the imposition of an oil embargo against Russia only if it would only affect maritime transport routes, and pipeline transit would not be subject to these bans.
Recall that the EU may pay compensation in Hungary if Orban agrees to an embargo of Russian oil.
