Police believe human remains in the US’s largest reservoir are linked to mafia crimes in the 1970s and 80s.
The shallowing of the Colorado River due to drought exposed the bottom of the Mid Lake reservoir, the largest in the United States, near the city of Los Vegas. As a result, human skeletons are found one by one on the shore.
It is reported by Sky News.
Investigators suspect the deaths were mob-related and the crimes were committed in the late 1970s or early 1980s, as the victims’ shoes were made at that time.
Two retired Las Vegas police officers have announced a reward for those who find more bodies in the reservoir, offering $5,000 to divers for each body.
“We think that there are more dead. There are several mysterious disappearances that have not been clarified. Since there is very little water due to the drought, it is likely that they will be found,” they told the press.
The Mead Reservoir was formed by the Hoover Dam in the 1930s and is part of a system that supplies water to more than 40 million people in several states, including Arizona, California, Colorado, and Nevada. Now the water level in the reservoir is the lowest since 1937.
Recall that one of the largest in the United States, the Colorado River, which crosses seven states, has become endangered due to climate change and human activity . As of April 2022, more than 99 percent of the river basin area is in an “abnormal” or “extreme” dry state.
