Nine-year-old Sofia in Nikolaev was crippled by a cluster shell.
The fragment went through her entire brain from the frontal area and stuck in the back of the child’s head. Such an injury is usually fatal, or patients lose the ability to move, speak, and think.
Sophia’s story is told by TSN.
Nine-year-old Sofiyka and her family were running away from their village from shelling in early April. However, in Nikolaev, the “Russian world” caught up with them – the family fell under the explosions of cluster bombs. One of the debris hit the child in the head.
“Everything exploded there, horror, what was happening. I closed it as best I could and said: “Daughter, read the prayer.” She read the prayer “Our Father.” When everything stopped, my sister raises her head and says: “What is this ? Sofiyka’s head is bleeding like a fountain,” says the girl’s mother.
A fragment hit Sofiyka near the children’s hospital – this is what probably saved the girl. She was brought to the hospital by eyewitnesses.
Sofia was in a coma for two days. When she came to herself, she was transferred to the Odessa hospital, because it was safer there. And at the end of April, they were taken to Lviv by an evacuation train, and already here the doctors took out a fragment from the head.
“The entrance hole was in the frontal area, and a fragment of this explosive object got stuck practically in the posterior cranial fossa, that is, it went through the entire brain, and went through the so-called median structures or the brain stem. The entire part of the left hemisphere from the frontal area of those 11 centimeters was damaged “, – says the head of the neurosurgical department of the St. Nicholas Hospital in Lviv, Mikhail Lovga.
Doctors removed the fragment, and the hole was closed with a titanium plate. After the operation, Sofiyka learns to walk again and works tirelessly with a rehabilitation specialist every day.
