Russian and Belarusian players will be allowed to play in the French Open but have been threatened with punishment for openly supporting the war.
If any of them make pro-Putin statements in the media, sanctions will definitely be applied against them.
This was announced by tournament director Amelie Mauresmo.
“It is very difficult, perhaps there is no fair solution here. We adhere to the position of the European governments, which they expressed in March – the suspension of the national teams of Russia and Belarus.”
But we are not talking about athletes if they play clearly under a neutral flag. We will be very picky about this.
If any of them make pro-Putin statements in the media, there will definitely be sanctions,” Mauresmo TM quotes.
Recall that the International Tennis Federation (ITF) expelled from its membership the federation of Russia and Belarus because of the war that the Russian Federation unleashed against Ukraine.
