Andriy Shevchenko: “I wanted to tell the world the truth about the war in Ukraine”
Ukrainian football coach Andriy Shevchenko heard about the war in his homeland in London.
“I couldn’t believe it had happened,” he said. When the shock passed, Shevchenko said, he was clear about what he wanted to do – help his country.
He could often be seen on Italian TV channels (the athlete lives in Italy), where he emotionally talked about what was happening in Ukraine.
And recently Volodymyr Zelensky appointed Andriy Shevchenko ambassador of the national brand United 24.
We met with the athlete on his first visit to Kyiv since the beginning of the war and talked about how his life has changed recently, about helping Ukraine, his role in the United 24 project and his attitude towards Russian athletes.
BBC correspondent Sviatoslav Khomenko spoke with Andriy Shevchenko.
