Huawei held a long-awaited presentation of the new generation of flagships of the Mate series. The novelties of the day were four models at once (Mate 50, 50 Pro, 50 RS and 50E), but here we will talk about the first two. The company decided to continue the return to basics begun when the Mate Xs 2 folded out earlier this year, reviving the on-screen “notch” in the Pro model, which even Apple moved away with the iPhone 14 Pro. Of course, she returned for a reason: inside is a scattering of sensors, including 3D ToF, designed to provide quick face unlock and gesture control. In addition, the company emphasized its minimalism – the height is 21% less than in the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

In the design of the rear panel of Huawei Mate 50 and 50 Pro, the development of the “ring” concept of two generations of predecessors continues: the camera block is designed in a round module, inside of which three sensors and laser autofocus are installed. In the case of the Mate 50, we are talking about a 50-megapixel IMX766 main sensor without OIS, 13-megapixel width and a 12-megapixel periscope (optical zoom x5), and the Mate 50 Pro is distinguished by the presence of OIS stabilization on the main module and themes, and increased to 64 Periscope resolution megapixel with support for 200x hybrid zoom at 3.5x optical. An important advantage of the main cameras of both models is the variable aperture (f / 1.4-f / 4.0), which allows you to flexibly adjust the depth of field of the frame. Software-wise, the camera system is based on XMAGE, Huawei’s own development that combines years of experience with sensors, color, and computational photography.

Another notable feature of the Mate 50 and 50 Pro was the support for sending messages via Beidou satellites in remote places where normal communication does not catch. In terms of autonomy, both models have similar battery capacities (4460 in the Mate 50 and 4700 mAh in the Mate 50 Pro), and also support 66W wired, 50W wireless and 7.5W reverse charging. And the company also provided a special emergency mode, which reserves 1% of the battery charge, allowing the device to perform one of the scenarios: an additional 3 hours in standby mode; 12 minutes of calls or 4 QR code readings.

It’s a little surprising to see a 90Hz screen in a 2022 flagship, but that’s just the way the Mate 50 is. Thankfully, the Mate 50 Pro already has a 120Hz panel. High-frequency PWM 1440 Hz and heavy-duty Kunlun Glass are announced – however, only in more expensive models with a leather cover.

“Under the hood” of the new products is the 4G version of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, and their cases are reliably protected from water and dust according to the IP68 standard. The color palette of both models includes three options with a glass case (silver, purple, black) and two leather ones (orange, black). The Huawei Mate 50 starts at CNY 4,999 for the 128GB model and ends at CNY 6,699 for the 512GB leather version. The minimum configuration of the Mate 50 Pro starts at 256 GB of storage for 6,799 yuan and ends at 7,999 yuan for 512 GB in leather. Sales of both models in China will start on September 21.
