lifecell announced the launch of a new calling technology under the eloquent name Voice over Wi-Fi — it allows subscribers to make voice calls based on a Wi-Fi network outside the coverage area of a cellular network. The new technology is currently in test mode and serves as a useful addition to the core VoLTE voice transmission technology .
lifecell separately emphasizes that they were the first to introduce VoWiFi technology, bypassing other mobile operators in Ukraine. It will provide connectivity from places where there is Wi-Fi, but limited mobile coverage, such as hiding places, basements, and basements. In this case, the Wi-Fi hotspot acts as an operator’s base station.
Currently, VoWiFi calls charged as regular voice calls are available to lifecell subscribers with modern Samsung and Xiaomi smartphones. You can check if the smartphone supports VoWiFi calling technology on the website for a complete list of compatible models . Interestingly, VoWiFi technology is not available to Apple smartphone owners, however, lifecell notes that this is temporary and the list of smartphones will soon increase.
To make calls over Wi-Fi, the subscriber’s smartphone must support VoWiFi Calling. The following conditions must also be met:
- having a USIM card;
- being in the Wi-Fi coverage area;
- activating the Wi-Fi Calling function on a smartphone
Activating VoLTE/VoWiFi on a smartphone (iOS and Android)
The service website has a FAQ section , where you can find answers to all basic questions.

At first glance, VoWiFi seems to be a rather useful technology, especially in the current conditions, so we hope that Kyivstar and Vodafone will not force themselves to imitate lifecell.
