Sony Interactive Entertainment Executive Vice President responsible for PlayStation and other Sony gaming initiatives, PlayStation console hardware architect Masayasu Ito will retire on October 1st.
Ito joined the Tokyo-based company in 1986 and worked on car audio systems before moving to the console division in 2000. During his time with the PlayStation Group, Ito led the development of the PlayStation 4, which sold over 117 million units, and the latest generation of PlayStation 5 consoles. He helped bring the redesigned PS4 Pro to market, adding improved graphics and compatibility.
Since its debut in November 2020, the PlayStation 5 has been plagued by supply chain and logistics issues. Prior to launch, Ito wrote on the PlayStation Blog about the console’s development challenges amid the pandemic. Part of the initial difficulty in assembling enough units was due to Sony’s ambitious custom designs for the console and its components, which led to production issues for chip supplier AMD.
“Our team values well thought out, beautifully designed architecture,” Ito wrote about Sony’s engineering philosophy in a blog post. “The interior of the console looks neat and tidy.”
Sony has created a division of PlayStation Studios Mobile and at the same time bought the developer of mobile games Savage Game Studios
