In an announcement on the official website on September 16, Intel introduced Intel® Processor, a new brand of processors that will replace Celeron and Pentium in its 2023 laptop product line.
“The new Intel Processor brand will simplify our offering so users can focus on choosing the right processor for their needs,” Josh Newman, Intel vice president and interim head of mobile client platforms.
The Intel® Processor will be positioned as a more affordable line alongside Intel® Core™, Intel® Evo™ and Intel vPro®. Budget processors will be easier to distinguish by name (one family instead of two) and to distinguish from representatives of the desktop line. The company doesn’t speak directly about the fate of the Pentium and Celeron brands in desktop PCs – it’s assumed they’ll stay. The further fate of the Atom brand is not disclosed either.
In the 1990s, the Pentium brand name was used to refer to a line of high-end desktop processors. More affordable chips were called Celeron. After some time, these brands also penetrated into laptops – now they have again left the mobile segment.
Intel does not disclose any details about the model names of specific chips. It is possible that with the change of the name of the series, the numerical-letter marking will change. Not so long ago, AMD also rebranded its mobile chips – they got rid of the words Ryzen and Athlon and got a new index of numbers and letters.
AMD is changing the naming scheme for mobile processors – it will be effective from 2023
