An extraordinary event happened this weekend – an unknown hacker posted a “ton” of material on the unannounced GTA VI, including many gameplay footage from an early build of the game, on the Web. Given the scale of this project (GTA V has maintained its position in the top global game sales for 9 years, has gone through three generations of game consoles), many call this leak the largest in history, fans are talking about it, other developers (for example, Rockstar supported the creator of The Last Of Us Neil Druckmann), just game lovers. Now the “affected” company itself has started talking about this leak.
In an appeal on social media, Rockstar acknowledged the attack on its servers and the theft of intellectual property, emphasized that there is no threat to gaming services, and also expressed regret that it shared the details of the future game in this way. At the same time, the developers say that the work continues according to the plan and the details will be announced as soon as they are ready.
In the meantime, information allegedly published by the same hacker continues to circulate on the Web. He now claims that GTA VI has a $500 million budget, another $100 million for marketing support, and an expected $1 billion in initial sales revenue. It is unlikely that any leaks will hurt Rockstar Games financially, but the reputational damage turned out to be quite large. Looking forward to GTA VI?
