The head of DxOMark explained why brands no longer give smartphones for testing

The story of Xiaomi’s refusal to send a copy of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra to DxOMark received an unexpected continuation. Having exposed the device to a frankly underestimated camera rating , the “specialists” of the publication decided to take another strange step. DxOMark CEO Frederic Guichard gave an interview to the Chinese edition of Jiemian News, in which he tried to explain the refusal of many brands to submit their smartphones to the DxOMark test. “It’s not that fewer and fewer manufacturers are mentioning our tests, but that fewer and fewer smartphones are able to take first place.” And since “only the first place in the rating can help in promotion,” companies allegedly do not want to send their new products for review.

The top manager also denied industry rumors, saying that DxOMark’s conclusions are incorruptible: “we do not sell points and places in the ranking”, and “the business model is to sell laboratories and technologies.” In the comments on the entry, the former vice president of OPPO noted (which, by the way, refused to cooperate with DxOMark a year and a half ago). According to him, “it’s true that the score and the place in the ranking are not sold, but the “service” is sold, including feedback for improvement, which as a result helps to increase the final score.”

It is amazing how much this description matches what we talked about at the very beginning of 2020, when an authoritative Chinese source announced the procedure and even the cost of the “test fee” that every manufacturer who wants to receive feedback from DxOMark must pay.
