Garmin has introduced a satellite communicator InReach Messenger, which allows you to send and receive text messages outside the cellular coverage.
This is not the first communication device of this type released by Garmin, which means that, despite the fact that this is a rather niche product, it quickly found its audience.
The InReach Mini and Mini 2 are Garmin’s first satellite devices and fall far short of the inReach Messenger in terms of design. The first obvious difference between the older models and the new one is the absence of a huge external antenna.
inReach Messenger resembles a smart watch without a bracelet. However, unlike them, messages from the device can be sent without pairing with the phone.
Other additional features can be activated by connecting the tracker to the Garmin Messenger app for smartphones. The companion app will automatically choose between Wi-Fi, cellular, or satellite to make sure your messages are being sent and/or received. In addition, the device and app can send an SOS message to the Garmin Global Emergency Response Coordination Center, available 24/7.
The device has a dedicated SOS button on the back, allowing users to quickly call for help in case of an emergency.
Another great feature that inReach Messenger offers is an external battery. Using it, you can recharge your smartphone to send test messages from the Garmin Messenger app.
The InReach Messenger battery promises up to 28 days of battery life at default settings. The device also has an IPX7 rating, meaning it can survive being submerged in water up to 1 meter deep for up to 30 minutes.
All features of inReach Messenger are paid. The cheapest monthly subscription is $15, however the price can go up to $65 if you want unlimited text messages and very short tracking intervals (2+ minutes). The communicator itself costs $300.
